One of the popular hats that are seen in the Western part of the world is the Greek fisherman hat. This is made up of cotton or wool that is commonly used by seaman and fisherman. This is best and very practical to use in any kind of weather. When we hear the word fisherman’s hat, we immediately think of a typical elderly man having a long and grey beard. This fisherman’s hat is very popular for all men living in the western world. These fisherman hats have already become part of the uniforms of the ship captains and seaman.

In the past, Greek hats can only be seen in the water, but now they are used everywhere with different sizes and shapes. The collection of these fisherman hats has a variety of choices like large head hats with a combination of man made designs that has a unique appearance that offers a new look that is applicable in any season. Having a fisherman’s hat that is rugged and practical is a best choice to use when you will go for fishing, yachting or boating. However, you can also use this in winter season using a Greek fisherman hat that made use of a wool material.

Working hand in hand with the Ulyssian and Aegean in producing a hat collection, you will no longer find a genuine Greek hat that is available in the USA. Nowadays, fisherman hats are almost made manually in some ancient places outside the Athens that are loyal in making a fisherman hat. These Greek hats are now available in soft and very durable leather, cool cotton and full lined wool. Any kind of material that was used in making a fisherman’s hat, this will remain as a protection from too much sun exposure or any other elements.

Even if this hat has a plain look it is very comfortable and really looks good. For so many reasons, Greek hats are very popular. However, a person who tends to wear this in traditional way may represent as a trustworthy and hardworking individual. At present, we commonly see these Greek hats worn by the cadets, police mans and general in the arm forces. And as we can see, a person who wears this kind of hat is well respected and valued by the people because of what they stand for.

There are various kinds and designs of a fisherman’s hat that is available worldwide. If you have difficulty in finding a perfect one for you then you might want to check the internet and search for some websites that are available, and you can easily purchase or buy your Greek fisherman hat and pay them using your credit card.

With an apparently unending array of gear and gadgets, fly fishing seems to be a varied and interesting sport. Most of the available options could be confusing to anyone who is new to Fly fishing. Anyone with a flair for fishing should know the important accessories about it. The 10 common pieces concerning fly fishing gear include a reel, fly fishing rod, line, files, leader, waders, net, clippers, vest and sunglasses.

Fly fishing rod

This rod is one of the mandatory equipments for fly fishing. These rods are usually different when compared to regular and conventional fishing rods and are designed in unique manner. It would allow casting the fly and fly line. Rods today are often constructed using types of graphite compounds. Many of the rods are still structured from bamboo or fiberglass. The Fly rods are usually categorized based upon weights of line they are structured to be used with.

Reels

The Fly fishing reels essentially, are less significant than the rods. Unlike conventional fishing, along with fly fishing one does not reel in the fish. The Fly fishing methods involve stripping the line with free hand. Quite many fly fishing reels actually are of primitive designs and hence not so very expensive. Anglers commonly “palm” the reel for creating the drag, than relying upon internal drag mechanisms within the reel.

Line

The Fly fishing line has been specially designed for such style of fishing. Fly fishing line is considerably heavy compared to traditional fishing line. It is often tapered and designed for floating. Some lines are designed to sink, though. Some anglers attach backer line in between fly fishing line and reel so as to increase the line available.

Leader

The leader is a monofilament, clear line which attaches to the extreme end of fly fishing line. Additionally, the fly is tied to the leader at the end. This leader is further tapered down into a narrow diameter towards the forward end. Leader matches more with the traditional fishing line.

The Flies

They are available in huge assortments of designs and styles. The dry flies are designed so that they float up in the water, nymphs and wet flies are structured for submerging, and few other flies are made to partially submerge. Flies could also be implied as attractive or imitative. Imitative flies are deliberated to imitate or manifest like a specific insect. On the other hand, attractive flies are structured to attract the fists not looking towards any specific natural food source.

The Waders

Waders are optional when you fish in warm water. But a few anglers go fly fishing in cold water streams to find waders enormously essential. Some popular wader styles currently include waders with waterproof lining and neoprene waders. Neoprene waders work very well in the cold water stream and serve in keeping the angler warm. The waders having a waterproof lining prove to be convenient and breathable when one goes hiking flanking a stream.

Net

A net is essential equipment for fly fishing. As fly fishing is often done standing in the waters, it could be not very easy to hunt a fish without good nets. Nets always have a hook attached. This would help the net so that it could be hooked on the anglers’ vest or waders. A net is particularly important in cases when the angler is trying to catch and release fishing.

Fishing Vest

As fly fishing is always tried in the water, a fishing vest seems to be a near-essential equipment piece. Vests would allow you in keeping essential gear and tools handy and neat as and when you find its necessity.

Clippers

Clippers are quite useful for clipping the line when you change the flies. You would rarely notice any fly fisherman with no clippers in their pocket or vest.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are pieces of personal gear which you would never want to forget. They would keep the sun to not reach your eyes and also protect them from stray fishing hooks. Polarized and good quality sunglasses would also assist in a better vision while you are out near the stream. Most anglers would also append a sunscreen and a hat to the catalog of personal gear which is essential.

There are other pieces of gadgets and gear which are available for every fly fisherman. The above mentioned ten items are perhaps among the most essential ones required for a successful and fun outing.

Eighty miles West Northwest from Los Angles, nestled in between the towering picturesque San Ynez mountains and the beautiful Pacific coastline is the city of Santa Barbara. It is frequently called the American Riviera because of its matching like, mediterranean climate. In the downtown area you will see that it is built in the Mission revival style. The city was shaped by the Spanish and Santa Barbara has manage to preserved this style. Walking along State street in the downtown area you can take in a succession of vistas, from the mountains to the ever changing Pacific Ocean. Indulge yourself as you shop for treasure in world-famous galleries and chic boutiques. If you have a sweet tooth you will find chocolate shops hard to resist in Santa Barbara. If you enjoy chocolate from around the world, try, Chocolate Maya, on State Street. What could be better than a fine glass of California wine and a chocolate truffle as you sit and people watch in one of the outdoor Cafes. Take the time to plan the evening dining in one of the fine restaurants that Santa Barbara has to offer.
You can savor the culinary delights of the region or choose from an extensive choice of
options from sushi to hamburgers. Chase Park 233 E. Cabrillo Blvd.
This remarkable park has been well planned for children, as well as the adults, to enjoy. If you are traveling with young children, this park is a must see. If you are not traveling with children, it is worth the time to take a peek and have a picnic.
For the children, the park has a number of dynamic play structures. One is shaped like a ship. It is the perfect place for the little pirates to start a seagoing adventure. A lighthouse is nearby for the landlubbers to hide in from the wannabe pirating marauders. We were fascinated by the colorful carrousel that brought back childhood memories. The beach is across the street, and the park is near Stearns Wharf and nearby parking lots. They have an easy turnaround to drop off your picnic items and carrousel riders. The drop off is located behind the merry-go-round.
If you are visiting the park on the weekend, there are artists showcasing their wares. It tends to get a little crowed with the vendors and sightseers, but it adds to the charm of this impressive ocean side park
Santa Barbara beaches are an idyllic setting—most of them face south instead of west. The beaches are great for beachcombers or just relaxing places to sit back in your beach chair and do some “California Dreaming.”
Keep in mind even with the cool breezes off the ocean, the sun is hot.
Use lots of sunscreen, pack a hat, bring plenty of water to drink, and don’t forget your camera. Take a walk out onto Stearns Wharf,
one of California’s oldest working wharfs, and enjoy the sights and sounds with the ocean below your feet. Since this is a working Wharf, you may see the fishing boats off-load their catches.
This could encourage the fishermen in your family, and if so, Sterns Bait and Tackle can set you up with the gear you need.
If you are not a fisherman, there are colorful shops to wander through. Or perhaps you want a little ice cream as you enjoy the scenic ocean along with views of the mountains and shoreline of Santa Barbara.
When your fisherman returns, you can have lunch in an assortment of cuisines on the Wharf. As you savor your fresh fish, you can always talk about the one that got away. Be sure to stop at the Ty Warner Sea Center on the Wharf. The young or old scientist in your family will enjoy interacting with the exhibits. You don’t have to be a diver; if you want to see the Santa Barbara Channel, you can watch the video at the” Channel Theater” in the center. You can examine samples of seawater or listen to Whales at the Karaoke station and hum along!

              Biography

Early years

Claypool was born September 29, 1963 in Richmond, California, but was raised in El Sobrante, California in a working class family with a history of working as auto mechanics. His early education included Collins Elementary School and De Anza High School. Les’ parents divorced when he was a young child, but he says that he had a decent childhood, citing that he was never abused or severely bullied.

Claypool developed a bass guitar slap technique listening to other bassists such as Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham. He also bought his first Carl Thompson bass, his trademark four string bass. (Claypool stated in August of 2009, that he now owns 13 bass guitars, including a multi-wood fretless 6-string called the Rainbow Bass.)

In 1986, after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, Claypool auditioned to play bass for Metallica, playing the song “Master of Puppets” on his bass. In Metallica’s Behind the Music, Claypool said that during the audition he jokingly asked the others if they wanted to “jam on some Isley Brothers tunes.” James Hetfield remarked that Claypool was not awarded the job because “he was too good”.

Primus

Main article: Primus (band)

Primus began as Primate with Les Claypool, guitarist Todd Huth and various drummers, most notably Jay Lane, in the mid-1980s, though Huth and Lane left shortly thereafter to pursue other projects. Claypool replaced them with guitarist Larry LaLonde and eclectic drummer Tim Alexander in 1989 (Tim “Herb” Alexander left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Brian “Brain” Mantia). Primus began selling out local clubs with their out-of-control live act and irreverent approach to music (their catchphrase was “Primus sucks!”). This was later to be changed.

From 1989 to 2000, Primus steadily became one of the most bizarre bands to gain significant mainstream airplay, headlining Lollapalooza in 1993, appearing on Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995, and even making an appearance at Woodstock ’94 where they performed their Pork Soda hit “My Name Is Mud” and were pelted with mud (Claypool claims to still have mud in his speakers). Also, in 1997, they were asked to play, and record, the theme song for the animated television show South Park. Claypool and Tom Waits have recorded on each other’s records since 1991 and have continued to do so. In 1999 he let Activision use the song “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” on the hit video game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

In 2000 Primus went on indefinite hiatus.

In mid 2003 Claypool reunited with former Primus drummer Tim Alexander and guitarist Larry LaLonde to record a DVD/EP called Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People, which Claypool described as the first DVD with supplementary music, as opposed to the contrary. In October of that year, the band staged a two month tour in which they performed two sets per show, the second consisting of their 1991 release Sailing the Seas of Cheese in its entirety. They continued touring into 2004, even performing their 1990 release Frizzle Fry in its entirety.

In Mid-August 2006, a DVD release entitled Blame It on the Fish was added to the listings of Amazon and other online shops. Shortly thereafter, the website The PRP reported that a rumor had surfaced implying that the band was quietly planning a North American tour for November/December 2006.

On October 17, 2006, Primus released both their first greatest hits CD They Can’t All Be Zingers and their third DVD Blame It on The Fish, subtitled An Abstract Look at the 2003 Primus Tour De Fromage.

They Can’t All Be Zingers includes sixteen digitally remastered songs that span their entire career, including a previously unreleased and extended version of “Shake Hands with Beef,” the Tom Waits collaboration “Coattails of a Deadman,” and “Mary the Ice Cube” from the 2003 DVD and EP Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People.

Claypool has let the video game Guitar Hero 2 use the Primus song, “John the Fisherman,” one of two songs in the game using the actual recording instead of a cover.

Blame It on the Fish: An Abstract Look at the 2003 Primus Tour De Fromage contains live footage from the band’s 2003 reunion tour, interview segments and behind the scenes footage. The DVD includes a 70 minute feature film and 90 minutes of bonus material, including a 30 minute mockumentary about the band in 2065. Blame It on the Fish is directed by Matthew J. Powers, who directed Never Been Done, a documentary about Jon Comer.

Primus: The Beat A Dead Horse Tour 2006 began in November 2006 and was completed the following December.

In 2008 Primus played at a few festivals including; Rothbury (in Michigan), The Ottawa Blues Fest, Quebec City Summer Fest, and Outside Lands Festival (in San Francisco).

Les Claypool let the DC snowboard team use the Primus song “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” in their 2007 movie “DC Mt. Lab 1.5″

Solo work

1994 – 2001

Sausage

In 1994, Claypool teamed up with guitarist Todd Huth and drummer Jay Lane to create an early Primus sound. Songs such as “Riddles are Abound Tonight” and “toyz 1988″ (now known as “Toys Go Winding Down”) gave way to a whole new breed of music.

Holy Mackerel

In 1996 Claypool produced, engineered and released a solo album, “Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel presents” Highball with the Devil. Claypool is credited with bass, drums and vocals on several tracks as well as guitar. Also on the album are Mark “Mirv” Haggard, Adam Gates, Jay Lane, Joe Gore, Charlie Hunter and Henry Rollins. The accompanying tour included Haggard and Gates on guitars with Bryan “Brain” Mantia on drums. It was announced during the Holy Mackerel tour that Mantia had been chosen to become the next Primus drummer.

Oysterhead

Main article: Oysterhead

In April 2000, Claypool collaborated with Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and Stewart Copeland (of The Police) as Oysterhead. Claypool and Anastasio had been looking for an opportunity to collaborate. Each had a mutual interest in playing with Copeland who had been a rock idol of their teen years. Also, Claypool and Copeland had an established friendship. Oysterhead were originally intended as a one time performance during Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Though timid of the band’s sudden and surprising popularity they eventually decided to record and tour. They released one studio album, The Grand Pecking Order, and toured before disbanding in 2001. They re-united for two performances in 2006, one at 10K Lakes Festival and one at Bonnaroo Music Festival

The Frog Brigade

Main article: Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade

In May 2000 Claypool formed Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, an experimental rock group. Claypool was asked to put together a band for the Mountain Aire Festival in Angels Camp, California. The band “of the most incredible guys (he) could possibly find” debuted that Memorial Day weekend and played a number of other festivals including moe.down. Originally he was going to call the band “Les Claypool’s Thunder Brigade.” Claypool states:

I originally was going to do the two drummer thing with Herb and Jack Irons, so I was gonna call it the Les Claypool Thunder Brigade. Michael Bailey from Bill Graham Presents said to me that it may sound a bit too heavy for the Mountain Aire crowd and to perhaps try something a little different that had to do with the event itself. Since it was home of the Calaveras County Frog Jump… hence the Frog Brigade and then it evolved into Colonel Les Claypool Fearless Flying Frog Brigade.

The Primus hiatus allowed him to return to his musical roots, playing songs by bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and The Beatles. Claypool has called the Frog Brigade his “mid-life crisis band.” From a set of October shows recorded at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco Claypool released two Frog Brigade live albums, one being a cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals. The line-up included Todd Huth, Eenor, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, Skerik and Claypool.

The Frog Brigade is also noted for Claypool’s being accepted into the jam band scene. Live Frogs Set 1 won “Best Live Album” at the second annual Jammys. Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti are both members of Bob Weir’s band Ratdog. Claypool performed with “The Rat Brigade” when opening for Ratdog once in 2000 and again in 2007. The Rat Brigade includes Claypool, drummer Lane and keyboardist Chimenti, with guest appearances by saxophonist Kenny Brooks and Bob Weir. Both years Claypool also guested on the Ratdog set.

2002 – 2005

In 2002 Claypool released a studio album of the Frog Brigade, Purple Onion. Musicians on multiple tracks for Purple Onion include Eenor, Mike Dillon, Skerik, Jay Lane, Ben Barnes and Sam Bass (Dillon and Skerik were both from Critters Buggin while Barnes and Sam Bass were from Deadweight). This album includes “Whamola” which later appeared as a remix for the theme of South Park Season 10.

C2B3

Main article: Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains

Also in 2002 Claypool collaborated with virtuoso guitarist Buckethead, Parliament-Funkadelic/Talking Heads keyboardist Bernie Worrell, and former Primus drummer Bryan Mantia under the name Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains (“C2B3″ which is to be said “C Squared, B Cubed”). Their concerts pushed the improvisational envelope by preparing no material and not rehearsing beforehand. At one of their shows they prepared sandwiches onstage for the audience to eat.

C2B3 re-united in 2004 to record The Big Eyeball in the Sky, an album with equal parts instrumental and vocal songs. The band began an 18-state tour of the US on September 24, 2004. The album features only one guest, the child-like multi-instrumentalist Gabby La La (noted as Gabby Lang on Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade’s Purple Onion) on vocals and sitar. She also opened on every show (sometimes to scathingly negative reviews) during the 2004 tour as a solo act with sometimes members of C2B3.

Claypool also produced and performed on Gabby La La’s first album, Be Careful What You Wish For…. Gabby La La is the first artist Les has signed to his label since Charlie Hunter in 1993. He has performed select shows with her (including the 2005 Bonnaroo Music Festival) and added her to his then new touring band, Les Claypool & His Fancy Band. The 2005 Fancy Band line-up also included Skerik, Dillon and Lane.

At the end of 2005, Claypool released 5 Gallons Of Diesel, a video retrospective of all of his work away from Primus.

Claypool’s first attempt at a feature length film, Electric Apricot: Quest For Festeroo, was shown on various film festivals in the late spring of 2006. The movie is a spoof of the jam band scene centered on the fake band, Electric Apricot, in the mockumentary tradition of This Is Spinal Tap. The group performed low-key shows in the California area (most recently High Sierra Music Festival) for the filming of the movie. The members of the band are characterized as Steve Hampton Trouzdale (Adam Gates) on bass and vocals, Steve “Gordo” Gordon (Brian Kehoe) on guitar and vocals, Herschal Tambor Brillstien (Jonathan Korty) on keyboards and vocals, and of course Lapland “Lapdog” Miclovik (Les Claypool) on drums and vocals. The film debuted on March 15. During a question and answer session at the Tiburon Film Festival where the film debuted Claypool said that the yet unreleased DVD would have an accompanying soundtrack CD. The film has won other awards as well including Best Feature (audience choice) at the Malibu Film Festival. Claypool also said that the band would possibly perform a few select shows, but a tour is unlikely as Adam Gates has a job at Pixar which makes touring difficult. Other cameos in the film include Arj Barker, Dian Bachar, Matt Stone and Sam Maccarone.

Of Whales and Woe and the Fancy Band

Main articles: Of Whales and Woe and Les Claypool’s Fancy Band

On May 30, 2006 Claypool released a solo album, Of Whales and Woe, with guest appearances by Skerik, Mike Dillon and Gabby La La. This album includes the song “Robot Chicken,” which is the theme song of the popular Adult Swim show. His son Cage and his daughter Lena even make a special appearance on the song “Back Off Turkey.” The release was followed by a tour of the U.S. with the following lineup: Les Claypool – bass, vocals; Skerik – sax; Mike Dillon – vibraphone, percussion; Gabby La La – sitar, theremin; Paulo Baldi – drums. This lineup is called Les Claypool’s Fancy Band and did national tours in both 2006 and 2007. A live DVD, Fancy, recorded from the 2006 tour was released in 2007. The audio track includes a mix of both soundboard and taper recordings. A song from the album, “One Better”, was used in National Lampoon’s TV: The Movie in a fight scene between Preston Lacy and Lee Majors.

South of the Pumphouse

Main article: South of the Pumphouse

Claypool’s first book, South of the Pumphouse, was released on July 1, 2006 by Akashic Books. Copies of the book were sold during Claypool’s 2006 tour of U.S.A. following the release of Of Whales and Woe. The book is a dark, clever tale of brothers, murder, drugs, and fishing, and it has been likened to the work of Hunter S. Thompson. Claypool gave his first interview about the book to The Book Standard, on May 11, 2006. South of the Pumphouse is currently in its seventh printing.

2007 – present

Besides touring in the Summer of 2007 nationally with the Fancy Band, Claypool performed that October with a version of the band, dubbed the Fancy Trio. The trio consisted of Les, Skerik on saxophone, and Mike Dillon on drums, vibraphone and percussion. They played at The Echo Project, an inaugural ecologically minded 3-day festival in Fairburn, Georgia on The Boukeart family farm. The set was similar to that of The Fancy Band’s tours, culling from Les’ solo and Frog Brigade albums, as well containing a cover of “One Step Beyond” by Madness and teases of other songs, including several Primus tunes, throughout their improvisational jams.

For many years Claypool has done a New Year’s Eve show at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California. More recently the New Year’s Eve show has been an Annual New Year’s Eve Hatter’s Ball featuring a hat contest. December 31, 2007 was the 3rd such annual event.

In 2008 a United States tour spanned from February 29 to April 5. It kicked off at the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, North Carolina and ended at The Warfield in San Francisco, California. The 2008 tour was a quartet featuring Claypool, Dillon, Skerik and Baldi.

During the year Claypool also performed several shows with Primus at festivals across America and Canada.

Pig Hunt is a film directed by James Isaac to be released in 2008. Claypool contributes previously unreleased material and plays the role of “The Preacher”.

Les composed several songs for the Wii game Mushroom Men, released in December 2008.

On December 31, 2008, Les rang in the New Year with his annual New Year’s Eve show. It was at the San Francisco Opera House with Zappa Plays Zappa sharing the bill and playing first.

Les was also a judge for the 7th annual Independent Music Awards. His contributions helped assist upcoming independent artists’ careers.
Ottawa Bluesfest, 2009

Les’ second solo album, Of Fungi and Foe, was released on March 17, 2009. The album consists of expanded material of the music from the Mushroom Men game, as well as the Pig Hunt motion picture, and features a guest appearance by Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz.

As of June 2009, Les is touring with Matisyahu, performing as a ‘double-feature’ set, as well as appearing together on stage.

Personal life

He lives near the village of Occidental in Sonoma County, California with his wife, Chaney Claypool, his son, Cage Oliver Claypool, and his daughter Lena Tallulah Claypool. His home is called “Rancho Relaxo”, after a Simpsons episode where Marge gets sent to a spa of the same name. He records most of his music at his home. He is famous for his wacky sense of humor and overall very eccentric personality. He has recently been very open about his liberal political views and his dissatisfaction with former president George W. Bush.

Claypool is an avid fly fisher, and even appeared as a special guest on a 2004 taping of Fly Fishing the World filmed in Idaho and a 2005 taping in Quebec, Canada. Both episodes are available on the extras section of 5 Gallons Of Diesel.

I sailed on the Celebrity Cruises Mercury Alaska Inside Passage Cruise 7 Nights Round Trip from Vancouver, BC. Date: July 13, 2007

Fri, Jul 13

Vancouver, British Columbia Depart 5:00 PM . We flew from JFK to SLC and then to Vancouver. There were long, long lines in customs -a t least 200 people ahead of us. Some people chose USA direct, where the cruise line takes you through, directly to the ship. In hindsight, if we had limited time to get to the ship, we should have chosen this method. It was glorious in Vancouver – nice and sunny, not too hot. We arrived at Canada Place by tai, waiting on a security line, US customs (we had only been in Canada about ½ hour, and then another line to check in. The whole procedure from getting off the plane and onto the Mercury took about 3 ½ hours!

Once onboard, an attendant took my carry

on and took us to our cabin, on the continental desk (bottom of the boat). The room, an outside cabin, was spacious, and well laid out. The bathroom, however, reeked of mold. We look around, thinking it was faulty caulking, but we could not see anything obvious. We thought of asking to change cabins since we had not yet unpacked. We instead asked at the guest relations desk to have our cabin thoroughly cleaned. While we were at dinner, it was doused with Clorox. It still reeked of mold.

I went to a cocktail party for a few minutes, and then went to the theater for a preview show. The 2 or 3 segment by the singers and dancers was good, much better than on the Millennium, so I have high hopes for the entertainment on other nights.

We had a wonderful table in the dinner room, directly in front of the Captain’s table.

Sat, Jul 14

Inside Passage (Cruising) Cruising

I woke up at 540 AM, to find out that breakfast did not start for quite some time, the pools don’t open to 8AM (I was hoping for an early morning lap before anyone could see me in my bathing suit). Instead, I walked the jogging track. 12 laps= 1 mile. There were many 20 or so people there, and the first whale of the trip was spotted on the side of the ship. A few minutes in the gym, and then breakfast, which was delicious and uncrowded at 730AM. I changed into my bathing suit, but the pool was too cold even for polar bears. I was the only one in the whirlpool. A few minutes freezing on deck afterward trying to read my book.

Seminar

lunch

tea

geography trivia.

Our first formal night. Waiter made recommendations, which were excellent.

Show was fabulous. Best I have seen on a cruise. Lots of Broadway tunes, and popular songs, done with dancing. Some of the moves were a bit awkward.

Sun, Jul 15 Juneau, Alaska Docked Arrive 1:00 PM Depart 10:00 PM

Track in the fog. What a wonderful sight when the mountains suddenly broke through the fog. Snow capped, pine tress, the works.

We sailed for several house glimpsing a glacier through a passage, and seeing small boats nearby. We reached Juneau, the capital on time and waiting for the announcement to disembark. Just outside the docking area are tour booths. We choose MGT who gave an AAA discount. I wanted just a transfer to the Glacier $6 each way, but my husband choose a city tour as well. Funny commentary. We stopped at a beautiful log cabin church by the lake. Spectacular view. The vehicle was like an old city bus, but clean and comfortable. The weather was glorious. Everyone gasped with the first sight of the glacier. Awe inspiring!. Light blue, and massive. There are park rangers there to explain things. The visitors center costs $3 more. We did not have time for it. The small gift shop charges no tax because it is a non profit. I bought some local wildflower seeds. It says they grow any where. We’ll see.

Our first real shopping opportunity in town found us carrying large bags of tee shirts, hats, and fleece vest back. We were too tired to eat in the main dining room, so we ate at the buffet (Italian), and then saw a movie in the cinema.

By the way, I was wearing layers, but in the brilliant sunshine, I required only a long sleeved cotton shirt and a hat.

Mon, Jul 16

Skagway, Alaska Docked Arrive 7:00 AM Depart 6:00 PM bus/train. We woke up to fog and rain. Really happy I bought the fleece in Juneau and had a poncho. The rain was rolling off the decks. The bonus was that we were so close to the shore on our Continental deck (lower level) cabin that we could see a sea otter frolicking on the shore just outside our cabin window.

Not much happening on board on a port day. The Jacuzzi and Thalassotheray pool were closed. I was a bit sorry that we had prebooked a trip independent of the trip (no refunds), because the weather was not conducive to a trip. I guess it was better than having booked a bike trip! The poring rain was lighter by lunchtime, when we boarding our train to the summit.

Booked Chilikoot Charters independent of the ship. http://www.chilkootcharters.com They picked us up at the dock and took us to the main station to board the White Pass. We had a private car just for our small group. We could move from right to left as the views changed. Lots of empty seats. The rain made the rivers and waterfalls very active. I can’t imagine how the gold miners ever survived life outside in this for months at a time! The bus ride back to town was uneventful. The town is colorful – both in the color of the buildings and the personalities of the eccentric locals. Since this excursion enters Canada, US and Canadian citizens must carry a passport or birth certificate with photo ID. Guests of other nationalities must bring their passport.

Tue, Jul 17

Hubbard Glacier (Cruising) Cruising Arrive 10:00 AM Depart 1:00 PM Arctic blue ice moaning and groaning. When you get to the glaciers, you’ll see calving (parts of the glaciers falling into the water) and can actually hear the glaciers move! We went right up to the face of the glacier, much closer than I ever thought we would.. The best view ( and the warmest) was from the treadmill in the gym- right at the front of the ship. We went outdoors as well to hear the naturalist on board do here commentary. There were seals nearby.. Later when exiting the bay, we was pairs of dolphins swimming towards the ship and jumping along the way.

Wed, Jul 18

Ketchikan, Alaska Tendered Arrive 1:00 PM Depart 8:30 PM You can also walk in the town on the well marked city walking trail. There are many totems in the town, in parts and elsewhere. The lumberjack show is good, not too hokey, or so we were told by some who attended. We chose to walk through the town and do a bit of shopping. There are good shops for buying native crafts here as well.

The weather was fabulous again. Some of the local kids were spending their afternoon jumping from the bridge into the – cold – water. In the same area, fisherman were catching large fish. Formal evening again. Good entertainment, too. http://www.visit-ketchikan.com/ThingstoDo/ToursandActivities/tabid/99/Default.aspx

Thu, Jul 19

Inside Passage (Cruising) Cruising. So many activities on board that it was hard to choose – a film, a cocktail party, talks and lectures, and more.

Fri, Jul 20

Vancouver, British Columbia Arrive 7:00 AM

Tips – the best tip I can give is to do as many of the activities as you can on the ship and at ports of call. Some people spend most of the cruise relaxing in their cabins or sitting pool side. Well, they can do that anywhere….

Each night you’ll be given a schedule for the next day’s activities. Pick out a couple of things and be sure to attend. Don’t miss the nightly entertainment—most of the shows are quite good. Get there early for the best seating.

When you’re in Glacier Bay, be sure to be outside on the front deck for most of it. Dress

warmly—even if it’s a nice day, while the ship is still moving you can feel quite chilly. You have a good opportunity to see wildlife (bears, eagles, etc.), so bring your binoculars and camera. When you get to the glaciers, you’ll see calving (parts of the glaciers falling into the water) and can actually HEAR the glaciers move!

What to bring: Layers – everything from shorts and tee shirts to long sleeved shifts and a fleece. If you forget something warm, you can always buy something there. My husband a I both bought winter jackets really cheaply. -available in all sizes and colors Before we boarded the ship in Vancouver, we had gotten these free coupon books at the port. They proved to be a great benefit – free gifts in most stores we would have gone to anyway – everything from Alaska hats to souvenir mugs and tee shirts with a purchase.

The Mercury is a mid sized ship, much more to my liking than the mammoth Millennium that I sailed on in May through the Mediterranean. No long lines anywhere. The staff were excellent, the cabins a good comfortable size, and the entertainment good and activities very varied. It lived up to Celebrity’s 4 star reputation.

Clothes designed for fly-fishing are different from those meant for hunting or camping. Clothing for the use of anglers is designed keeping in mind the fact that they spend time in water as well as on land. There are special items of clothing required for fly-fishing; these include waders, rain gear, a fishing vest, underwear, gloves, polarized sunglasses and a hat.

Hip or chest waders are an indispensable item required for fly-fishing. Hip waders may be used while fly-fishing in small streams, but chest waders that reach above the waist can be used for all types of fishing conditions. Two types of chest waders are available, namely, boot-foot waders and stocking-foot waders. The boot is an important part of the boot-foot wader. Many anglers prefer to use stocking-foot chest waders made up of neoprene, which need a separate pair of wading shoes.

Another essential item of fly-fishing clothing is a fishing vest. The fishing vest typically will have a number of large pockets to hold all the supplies that the angler would require for his fishing trip. One would not want to leave the water each time something is required. A good vest with Velcro fasteners is ideal because it allows quick and easy access to the tools and closes securely.

A rain suit of good quality material is another necessity for those practicing fly-fishing. To avoid perspiration on the inside of the rainwear, it should be manufactured with materials that breathe. The rainwear should close securely round the neck and wrists. The jacket of the rainwear should also have a hood.

Full-length underwear must be worn under the waders if you go fly-fishing. The underwear will prevent heat loss from the body if you stand in the cold water for numerous hours. Woolen underwear is the best choice. Other options for socks and underwear are Durofold. This material is a blend of wool, cotton and polypropylene.

A good pair of polarized sunglasses is an essential item of fly-fishing gear. The sunglasses reduce the glare of the sun and make it easier to see in the water. Gloves will help to keep the hands and fingers warm. However, wearing gloves will dull the sensitivity in the fingers. In fly-fishing, it is crucial to have full sensitivity to the fingers. To avoid the problem posed by wearing gloves, fly fishing gloves are designed to leave the tip of the fingers from the last joint, free for movement.

A wide brimmed hat will keep the sun off the face and protect the back of the neck and ears. The hat also protects the fly fisherman from being hit by hooks if a bad cast of the line or a strong gust of wind carries the fly towards the face or head.

The correct fly-fishing clothing gear will keep the angler dry, warm and safe. It adds to the comfort level and thus helps to enjoy the sport.

Bamboo has been a popular textile used in the manufacture of corsets, bustles, hats and shoes for centuries. Recently there have been advances in technology that enabled a far wider range of applications for this very versatile product. The modern bamboo fibers work well as a cloth and are made from a blend which includes bamboo and cotton or organic cotton yarn or even one hundred percent bamboo that has been woven into a yarn. The blends which include bamboo can even be used to create spandex or even hemp fibers.

For a long time now the Japanese and Chinese have known of the advantages of bamboo and have woven shoes and hats from it. The common sight of a typical farmer or fisherman wearing a hat is most always one made from bamboo. Recently more modern technology has enabled bamboo to be processed into yarn that gives it the ability to become clothing either alone or in combination with other fibers.

Through various methods of manufacture, bamboo can be turned into a very viscose fiber that is very soft and pleasant to feel. Some processes can even turn bamboo into a likeness of linen, very soft and luxurious to the touch. This material is also very durable and long lasting. This can create even more uses for bamboo used in clothing, such as bed sheets, blankets, rugs, flooring, furniture, and the list goes on and on.

China is the point of origination for much of the bamboo fiber used in the manufacture of clothing. There are patents involved in the manufacture of bamboo fibers and this source of bamboo must be organic and pesticide free so as not to be harmful to peoples health. Bamboo is very efficient in its use of water and requires very little compared to most other plants.

Bamboo is claimed to be much better than most textiles for the manufacture of clothing and other materials. As bamboo is naturally organic, it does not require use of pesticides or even fertilizer to make it grow. Bamboo is a grass and cutting it only encourages faster regeneration. As one of the fastest growing of all the world’s plants, bamboo is very self sustainable. Additionally, a stand of bamboo absorbs up to thirty five percent more carbon dioxide than a stand of trees, making it very eco-friendly.

It is also a material that will keep you warm in cool weather and cool and comfortable in warmer climates.

Bamboo clothing can be found all over now and is growing in popularity as people find out how versatile and long wearing it can be. Colors and styles are nearly limitless. More and more big name clothiers are offering this very eco-friendly material in their clothing lines every day.

Camping hiking gear or apparatus that one requires with on an outdoors climbing or backpacking vacation can vary relying on what sort of trip and where. Even though walking is regarded distinct from backpacking (overnight camping), the tools of requirement is of the shorter time period and much more practical in dynamics for this kind of a walk. However even for any day time journey it is prudent to pack at least standard options for scenarios that may possibly arise which includes getting made to stay the night, getting lost, or accidental injuries.

Weight and bulk limit the amount of camping hiking gear that one can transport (particularly if one follows the basic principle of Leave No Trace and does not dispose of goods around the trail).
Criteria for packing an item include weight, mass (size), quantity of option utilizes plus the odds of every of those utilizes apparent, weighed against the significance. For instance, a whistle may well seem unlikely to become required, but could be actual life saver when it does and weighs next to nothing. Some other camping hiking gear, like a sleeping bag, may also be essential yet can also be really restricting, so a simpler alternative as an extra layer of clothes may possibly be a much better concept.

Hiking gear may possibly be thought to be in a number of categories but here it will likely be divided into these five, products worn, carrying goods, essential equipment, foods and drink, and optional products. Items worn may be described as something that a hiker wears such as footwear, clothes, head equipment, and so on. Backpacks and waist packs are regarded carrying goods. Objects which are essential for the hike safety or needed in possible emergency situations is important gear. Meals items to take into account would be considered a snack or lunch. And any other products that the hiker desires to bring together such as chairs, notebooks, hammocks, camera..
. are all regarded as being optional goods.

The hiker will typically think about clothing objects very first depending on the anticipated climate and demands in the particular hike area. Numerous hikers wear walking boots or shoes. These are available in a wide variety of high best (greater ankle support), or reduced best (a lot more comfortable) designs. Some hikers wear various rugged outdoor sandals. Shoes ought to be rugged sufficient for that terrain envisioned (hiking boots for any rocky mountain, vs sneakers over a paved rail trail).
Hikers will typically look at h2o proofing the boots or shoes according to the weather (rainfall, snow or slush), along with the nature with the trail (swampy or wet).
Together with shoes most hikers should also take into account socks that will help wick sweat from the hiker’s ft, provide warmth, and supply buffering inside the shoe. Socks as with boots, ought to be provided unique attention to (ie. no irritating ridge above the toes).
Shoes is naturally vital for lengthy distance trekking.

Outfits are finest put on in layers, so one can very easily adapt to changing circumstances. So two thin sweaters make additional sense than one thick one. Also, on overnight excursions, continue to keep one established of outfits dry for evenings and nights (ie. a jogging match) and put the working day clothing back on before one begins trekking, even if they are wet. A warm hat or cap, even when no cold climate is anticipated, may be the finest insulator due to the fact lots of entire body heat escapes via the head (“If your feet are cold, set over a hat”).
A hat may also present safety through the sun. A big handkerchief can are available in handy for numerous purposes, including a rough water filter, a thin scarf or perhaps a bandanna to maintain the sweat out of one’s eyes. Plus a rain coat or parka preferably either one that fits over the backpack or accompanied by a separate pack liner.

The hiker then considers what camping hiking gear is desired to take the gear in and what products to take based upon the hike. This may be straightforward fisherman’s jacket or perhaps a day-pack for short hikes, or possibly a total backpack. If heading on a backpacking vacation, contemplate a backpack where camping hiking gear could be attached towards outside and hang through the backpack. This leaves the hands free to move with no carrying more goods.

The important items necessary for hikers is going to vary as nicely. It is really a good concept to hold a pocket knife, perhaps with a tin opener, a saw, and tweezers for removing thorns and such. Flashlights, trail maps with ample detail, a compass and roughly understanding which way is North can already make a large distinction if lost. A little 1st aid kit could aid in-case there is an injury. Matches, a lighter, a flint or fire-steel (usually work, even when wet), candles, or tinder plus expertise how you can start a fire. In emergencies, a campfire may be one from the greatest life savers (warmth and signalling) and it isn’t as effortless to produce as some might think. A fire also keeps up the spirits, which may also be a life saver.

Meals and drinks is very a lot explanatory. Some in the camping hiking gear things more than looked are a water flask (in addition h2o if desired), h2o purification tablets and/or filter, and plastic bags of numerous kinds.

Meals that’s carried should preferably be using a low drinking water content to preserve the fat down. Plastic bags of numerous kinds and sizes to continue to keep points dry and pack issues out. Ziploc bags are extremely functional simply because they’re simply closed and opened. Garbage bags could be utilized to line the backpack with, but additionally to place in one’s shoes to keep the ft cozy, even when the socks are currently wet.

Optional items to think about are dependant on the length from the trip as well because the objective. There are lots of camping hiking gear products to take into account. For sleeping it is usually as easy as an added pair of clothing or possibly a mat, sleeping bag, tent, hammock, etc. To protect the hikers skin one particular could use insect repellent, sun cream, or clothes. Other additional extras are toilet paper, mosquito net, pillow, string, rope, fishing line and fish hooks, little axe, cooking pot, eating utensils, rain pants, towel, super glue, soap, GPS, cell mobile phone… as well as the list goes on.

Wherever ever the hiker or camper goes or stays one thing is for certain, the camping hiking gear can be a requirement to possess a enjoyable secure journey.

There is much to be said for book learning, regardless of your age and background. Books can give you a great foundation in any art or information that you happen to be learning. However, they are underestimated when it comes to fishing. Most fishing enthusiasts prefer to look on the Internet, ask friends or learn via trial and error than read a book that can help inform them of new techniques. Books are also fantastic sources of information in the way of hints and tips from the esteemed experts that write them.

As a result of the above, books are seriously under utilized. There are some absolute gems available out there that any enthusiastic bass fisherman or woman should read if they want to improve their chances of success. They are undoubtedly popular, but nowhere near as popular as they should be. Choosing one of the following books will give you a head start and give you the edge whether you are competing against your friends or in a tournament!

Largemouth Bass: Tournament-Tested Patterns for Catching Big Bass in Lakes, Rivers, and Reservoirs (The Freshwater Angler) by Creative Publishing International (Jan 1, 2001)

This book provides an excellent introduction to one of the most common varieties of bass to be found in America. It tells you literally everything hat you need to know in order to catch more bass, from where to find them to the techniques and equipment that should be used to catch more of them! All of the techniques that are outlined in the book have photos attached so you can see, step-by-step, what you should be doing. It was published in 2001 and so is a recent and relevant book, but it will stand the test of time because the information is so comprehensive!

Everyone can benefit from the information because it is so easy to understand and the techniques are easy to use as well. Whether you have never picked up a rod before or have been bass fishing with some success for years, you should read this!

Kevin Van Dam’s Bass Strategies: A Handbook for All Anglers by Kevin Van Dam and Louie Stout (Jan 1996)

Kevin Van Dam is a skilled bass fisherman who just happens to be one of the best in the world. As such, his book does not disappoint! Van Dam aims this book at every bass fishing enthusiast at every level and means it to increase the knowledge of fishing for bass that everyone reading the book has. That is not to say that he patronises the most experienced of readers because he does not. He just tells it like it is!

Unlike most other bass fishing authors, he actually deals with every step involved with preparing for a day bass fishing and actually going out onto the lake. Hints and tips are given regarding tackle, weather conditions and water conditions as well as going into the tactics that have made him so successful at his sport over the years.

Everything is easy to understand and there is no prior knowledge needed! However, if you do not happen to like one of his tactics or strategies then simply move on to the next one – he gives various alternatives for you to practically try and see what works best. What more could you ask for from a respected bass fisherman and author?

Decorating the Christmas tree is a tradition that most people enjoy and look forward to year after year. However, if you’ve been using the same old tired decorations for the last decade, it may be time to freshen things up and try something new. If you’re looking for some new Christmas tree decorating ideas, we’ve got five unique themes that are based on your personality and hobbies. No matter who you are or what you like to do, these ideas can be adapted to reflect everyone’s unique sense of style.

1. The Artist’s Tree
This is a really fun theme for someone who is passionate about art. If you enjoy a particular medium, such as sketching, consider decorating a tree with pencils, small sketch pads, sandpaper blocks, and other tools of the trade. You might even consider making a few small sketches that you could display on the tree, too. For someone who enjoys painting, you could decorate with paintbrushes, paint trays, and small pots of paint (well sealed, of course). The Artist’s Tree can be as fun and creative as you want it to be, and can be easily adapted to any type of art that you enjoy.

2. The Cook or Baker’s Tree
For those who love cooking and/or baking, why not decorate a fun tree to display in or near the kitchen? Decorate it with spatulas, wooden spoons, and other cooking utensils and implements. Cookie cutters are also a fun touch for someone who enjoys baking. Other nice decorations include popcorn strings, empty spice jars, and favorite recipe cards with a hole punched in one end and tied with a ribbon.

3. The Seamstress’s Tree
If you enjoy sewing or any other craft, decorate your holiday tree for it! Depending on the type of craft you enjoy, you could decorate with thimbles, colorful yarns, spools of thread, and pincushions. Neatly rolled fat quarters of fabric are a fun touch for a quilter, just as knitting or crochet needles are perfect for someone who works with yarn. And any seamstress would also love a few tape measures wound around the tree like tinsel.

4. The Fisherman’s Tree
A fisherman’s tree can be a real visual delight, with the many colorful and interesting lures available. Make a trip to your local sportsmen’s store and pick up a variety of lures in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Other nice touches are small fish nets, spools of fishing line, and any fish-shaped ornaments you can find. Top the tree off with a new fisherman’s hat, and you’ll have a unique Christmas tree that’s sure to inspire many fish tales during the holiday season!

5. The Handyman or Woodworker’s Tree
This is another enjoyable decorating theme if you have someone in the house who likes to work with their hands. While many tools are too heavy to use as decorations on a tree, it is possible to buy smaller versions of most tools. Small tape measures, flat head or Phillips screw drivers, draftsman’s pencils, wood scraps, and large nuts and bolts all make interesting decorations for this theme.

If none of the hobbies we’ve discussed are of interest to you, then adapt your own Christmas tree decorating ideas based on your personality and interests. Whether you’re a stamp collector, an automobile enthusiast, animal lover, or computer guru, the possibilities are endless when it comes to unique and interesting Christmas tree decorating themes. Just allow your ideas to be inspired by your hobbies, and you’ll end up with an amazing tree that really reflects your personality.
